Puppets Are Back in New York: The City’s Most Delightful Festival Returns

For five days this August, New York City is doing something gloriously unexpected: it is handing the spotlight to puppets.

The International Puppet Fringe Festival is back after a three-year hiatus, and it has returned bigger, weirder and more wonderful than ever. Running through Sunday at The Clemente in the Lower East Side, the festival brings together more than 100 performances from ten countries, turning one of the city’s most creative neighborhoods into a celebration of strings, sticks, shadows and imagination.

“It’s a welcome reminder that puppets are much more than The Muppets,” organizers say, and they’re not wrong. There is something deeply joyful about watching a piece of wood, cloth and string come alive in the hands of a skilled performer. Adults lean forward in their seats, children gasp, and for a few minutes everyone in the room believes.
